San Art

WEBSITE: http://www.san-art.org/

San Art is an artist initiated, non-profit contemporary art organization committed to the exchange and excavation of cultural knowledge within an interdisciplinary community. San Art is the most active independent arts organization in Vietnam dedicated to promoting, facilitating and showcasing contemporary art through production, exhibition, discourse and education. Our mission is to empower emerging artists in Vietnam and South East Asia by nurturing talent, fostering innovation and providing a forum for collaboration among local and international creative communities.

Sàn Art (‘san’ meaning ‘platform’) was established in October 2007 in response to the great lack of resources and opportunities concerning contemporary art and culture in Vietnam. In a country with little understanding of contemporary artistic production and its contribution to social and economic progress, artists must be strategically creative in order to be heard. Sàn Art thus endeavors to fill the gap in access and opportunity to engage contemporary ideas of culture via exhibition, lecture, workshop, artist presentations, commissioning of new work, and residency programs, in conjunction with local and international partners.

Dinh Q Le, Tuan Andrew Nguyen, Phu Nam Thuc Ha and Tiffany Chung founded San Art in October 2007.

Sàn Art is a non-profit organization established with the support of the ‘Vietnam Foundation for the Arts. In Vietnam, ‘non-profit’ status does not legally exist. Also, no art council exists to support independent artists and arts organizations. In order for Sàn Art to continue its focus on experimental contemporary art practice (as opposed to operating as a commercial gallery), Sàn Art must seek external funding to run its programs. In addition to applying for international grants for relevant exhibitions and projects, Sàn Art seeks generous donation by individuals and sale of work by artists it collaborates to assist ongoing infrastructural and programming costs. If you would like to become a supporter of Sàn Art, please send cash or cheque donation, large or small to:
